BioMPhar is an independent pharmaceutical company with its own portfolio and development programs. We operate from Panama City, with teams in the United States, Colombia and Costa Rica, and we work with manufacturers, laboratories and scientific centers that share a single standard: that of the patient who cannot wait.

We opened a route that did not exist to resolve a shortage that could not wait.
Faced with a shortage of vital medicines in Panama’s public health system, we worked with the Caja de Seguro Social and ASCIF, the Colombian Pharmaceutical Industry Association, to build an unprecedented international purchasing mechanism, overcoming a regulatory framework that had never contemplated it.
The first shipment arrived in August 2022: oncology, hematology, respiratory, mental-health and transplant medicines, several of which had not been procured in Panama for five years.

When there was no one else, protamine arrived in time.
Protamine reverses heparin at the end of cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass: without it, those operations cannot go ahead. In October 2022, the Director General of the Caja de Seguro Social himself asked us to source it urgently: nearly 60 patients were waiting for cardiac surgery at the Cardiovascular and Thoracic Institute of Ciudad de la Salud. Panama’s National Directorate of Pharmacy and Drugs authorized, on grounds of evident urgency, the import we arranged from a Colombian laboratory, warning that without it lives would be lost.
Once authorized, the protamine landed in Panama at 5 p.m. At 7 p.m., a critically ill 19-year-old woman went into surgery, and she pulled through.
In January 2024, facing a new shortage, the Caja de Seguro Social opened a direct negotiation and we were the only supplier to come forward. At that time, we were the sole source of protamine for cardiac surgery in Panama’s public health system.
